One of the most common sources of anxiety for singles in DC is the fact that it can be incredibly difficult to make new friends. Notice that I didn’t say, “meet new people.” That’s easy. It’s the forming friendships part that can be difficult. Washington is competitive. People often form relationships based on what they perceive they can get out of it professionally. It’s all about who you know. If you’re new to the city, then you may not know a lot of people, so your reserve of a primary social commodity is low.
In an effort to discover the ins and outs of the DC relationship-forming scene, for one week last month, Lavanya Ramanathan of the Washington Post “went Meetup mad.” Her piece is an interesting exploration of the Meetup word and worth the read if you’re looking to find your niche in this city.
