Affairs: Infidelity and Betrayal Trauma in Couples Therapy—Live
Clinical Treatment for Recovery, Repair, and Sustainable Relationship Agreements
Presented by Tammy Nelson, PhD
This live online post-licensure training for mental health professionals takes place on December 7, 2026.
Infidelity can profoundly affect trust, safety, intimacy, sexuality, identity, and each partner’s understanding of the relationship itself.
Drawing on clinical research and theory related to infidelity, betrayal trauma, couple recovery, therapist countertransference, and relationship agreements, Tammy Nelson, PhD, will present a three-phase treatment framework addressing crisis and stabilization, insight and reevaluation, and vision and renegotiation.
Participants will examine varied forms of affairs and explore how therapist bias, countertransference, triangulation, collusion, and unintentional shaming can interfere with recovery or contribute to retraumatization. Moving beyond a victim-perpetrator-rescuer framework, the training supports a more clinically balanced understanding of both partners and the relationship system.
Through clinical discussion, case material, and practical interventions, participants will learn strategies to help couples repair relational injuries, increase transparency, address implicit and explicit expectations about monogamy, and create sustainable relationship agreements for the future.
Teachings are appropriate for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients.
Participants will gain
- A three-phase clinical framework for working with couples following infidelity
- Strategies for reducing shame, bias, collusion, and retraumatization in treatment
- Interventions for rebuilding trust, intimacy, transparency, and relational safety
- Tools for helping partners create explicit and sustainable relationship agreements
Learning Objectives
