Blended Families & Connected Kids Summer Group

Many children spend time adjusting to the changes that come with blended families. Very few are given a safe space to process those emotions, build connection, and learn healthy ways to navigate those transitions.

This 4-week summer therapy group does just that. Led by Dr. Latasha D. McFarland, EdD, MS, LPC, Certified Imago Relationship Therapist, this supportive and engaging group helps children ages 6–12 build emotional awareness, communication skills, confidence, and healthy family connections through play, creativity, movement, and therapeutic activities.

Children will learn how to express big feelings in healthy ways, strengthen relationships with siblings and step-siblings, navigate transitions between homes, and develop coping skills that help them feel more secure and understood. Through games, storytelling, art, mindfulness, and guided discussions, children will discover they are not alone in their experiences.

This group integrates play therapy, social-emotional learning, attachment-based approaches, and Imago-informed relational practices to support children in blended families with compassion, connection, and care.

Designed as both therapeutic and fun, this summer experience creates a safe environment where children can grow emotionally while building friendships with peers navigating similar family dynamics.

Enrollment is limited to maintain a supportive and personalized group experience.

The Blended Families & Connected Kids Summer Group is a supportive and engaging therapeutic group designed for children ages 6–12 who are adjusting to life in blended families. Through creative activities, play, movement, storytelling, art, and guided discussions, children will learn healthy ways to express emotions, strengthen relationships, and feel more secure within changing family dynamics.

This group creates a safe space where children can:

  • Explore feelings related to divorce, remarriage, co-parenting, step-siblings, and transitions
  • Build emotional regulation and communication skills
  • Increase self-esteem and resilience
  • Learn healthy coping strategies
  • Develop connection and empathy with peers experiencing similar family changes

Each session combines brief educational content with guided partner exercises and structured dialogue. Skills you leave with, not just concepts you hear about.

The four sessions:

  • Week 1: Healthy Communication & Emotional Connection. Learn practical communication skills to connect more deeply, listen with empathy, and create emotional safety in your relationship.
  • Week 2: Conflict Resolution & Emotional Regulation. Discover tools for managing disagreements, reducing negativity, calming emotional reactivity, and resolving conflict in a healthier, more productive way.
  • Week 3: Intimacy, Romance & Relationship Attunement. Explore ways to strengthen emotional and physical intimacy, nurture romance, and become more attuned to each other’s needs.
  • Week 4: Shared Vision & Building Your Future Together. Develop a relationship vision that honors each partner’s values, goals, and dreams while creating a meaningful path forward as a couple.

Is there more?

  • Each couple will receive all class materials during the first class
  • No prior therapy or Imago experience is required
  • This is an educational class, not group therapy.
  • Couples who complete this class and are interested in ongoing support may request a consultation with Jasmine for individual or couples therapy, pending availability

Who Is Jasmine?

I’m a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) and Imago-trained therapist practicing virtually in Maryland and Washington, DC. My background in HR and leadership gave me a front-row seat to what it looks like when people navigate major transitions, and how rarely they have real support for the relationship at the center of those moments. I love working with couples at the beginning, when the window is still wide open. Learn more about me here.
